Hey Team. We’re getting closer to a next generation WP e-Commerce but there are a few things we want to discuss with you before we launch.
Questions
- Where do people want the gold files kept in future. We were thinking wp-content/uploads/wpsc or something similar.
- Where do people want template files kept. Again I was thinking wp-content/uploads/wpsc/templates or something similar. We could do something snazy and create theme files in each WordPress theme but it seems overkill and not 100% necessary. What are your thoughts?
- Add / Edit Products. We’re going to overhaul this page and we want to know if you want us to keep the dual screen (products on one side and edit products on the other). My own preference is to have both and make it so that you can turn it into two page or collapse the product list in the left.
I’m open to suggestions. And if anybody thinks they have what it takes to help with this release then email me and we will look at adding you to our SVN.
The next generation of WP e-Commerce and you!
A list of pending jobs is available online and we’d love to see you get involved!!

Hi Dan,
Yes, I think the Gold files should be kept in the wp-content or folder. I’m guessing you’re moving stuff out of the plugin directory so that it will be possible to using the automatic plugin update functionality? Would be great if you could also auto-update gold cart files (if you have a valid key obviously).
I would store stuff in folders called “wp-content/wpsc/templates” and “wp-content/wpsc/gold-cart” etc, missing out the uploads folder. To me the uploads folder is more like the place where images etc get uploaded to through the WordPress interface and the main wpsc folder should live directly in wp-content.
This seems to be how many other plugins work.
I completely agree! I think that being able to store theme files and Gold files in a wpsc (or wpec) folder (especially files that have been customized) would save a lot of time during upgrades.
Thanks Ben!!! I’ll make sure the guys see this tomorrow :)
Looking forward to v3.7 – would it be possible to change the way the variations work. At the moment you have it globally, so if you say have Size you could end up having a lot of different sizes in there, because a lot of products have different sizes and size wording. Could we possible have it so variations are local to the product itself.
Also … (I forgot to put this on my last comment) … a way of putting in a price which includes VAT … at the moment it only allows this if you set the VAT rate to 0%.
Thanks
I second Darren’s VAT issue!
Ideally you want an option to display prices on the site including VAT but then show the VAT breakdown on the basket and confirmation pages. You can currently get prices to display by setting VAT to 0% but then you cannot calculate the VAT portion to display at basket level.
My very sincere suggestions as the biggest fan of WP E-Commerce:
Less features, please.
As the versions keep progressing for WP E-Commerce, more features have been added. That’s a blessing, but it also makes the plugins harder (as in more options to consider) to use, and not to mention – more bugs.
It would be a breath of fresh air if Dan decided to kill off a few features in the new 3.7 version.
Oh, I wouldn’t mind having the WorldPay integration and a working affiliate module. :)
That’s all.
Maybe it’s the case that some of the additional features should be added via plugins? If WP E-commerce has include hooks in the right places it should be possible to create separate plugins that extend the functionality. This would make the core plugin more simple for basic users, but provide the rich features require for some ecommerce sites. Thoughts?
hi
can i put a barclaycard payment system instead of protx in your shopping cart ???????
Tell us what features you think should be made into additional Plugins?
I think that personilization should be a seperate module. But thats just me :)
Also tell us where you want to see hooks added :)
Dan, to be honest I’m not sure, it was just a suggestion how you could simplify things if users did start to feel a little overwhelmed by all the functionality.
I think the current product edit screen is starting to look quite busy so I would be tempted not to add too much more functionality in here – unless maybe as extra panels – maybe having the more advanced panels default to being closed when you first install the plugin would make the product editing screen seem less intimidating?
I’m only now starting to have a proper dig through all the code and I’ve found there are quite a few useful hooks already – The one that can display stuff after the product description is particularly useful.
You could use tabs across the top (the same way you have done the settings).
Although I have to say, I’m not that keen on the tabs across the top. Especially as when you update content on some of the tabbed pages it doesn’t always refresh to show you the same tab again.
If no one has mentioned it yet. a weight shipping table by region. Ie. Oceania, Asia, Europe, America, South America, Africa or something like that.
widget could show categories by collapsing (when clicked the sub-groups can expand) and the parent categories could show index of child categories
Thank’s
Yep
Please continue to improve Search Engine Optimization features.
This is becoming more and more important to our business.
Keep up the great work, we love WP-Ecommerce.
Hi,
1) Fine with that.
2) Keep everything in one folder I would prefer. Not mixing everything up…
3) Products Edit within two columns is quite ok. What I would like is a small Editor for the second text field as well. Also I am experiencing some trouble with our German Umlaute (äöü etc.) within prodct descriptions and also within Categories.
Great plugin! I have some small translational issues – I will put these on a list and mail them.
Hey guys…
The plugin is AWESOME!! How about adding the ability to setup a thumbnail per variation item. For instance: On my site here I sell things with with color options that really need representation by a pic not just a word. The variations work great but my buyers have to leave the product page to view color options and then return to the product page to add the product to their cart.
Make sense??
Jay, that makes sense to me and I agree with you. Nice website, interesting banner navigation.
Thank you! I worked really hard to get it going but I have to give much of the credit to Wordpress, Wayne Conner (though I don’t even know him) and of course the ‘Brilliant Minds’ at Instinct.
Definitely! Another folder outside the plugin to store themes & another to store gold_cart_files, very practical.
You know you can’t make everyone happy but could we have the option NOT to have the WYSIWYG editor if we don’t want it?
Please do not make the second description field a wysiwyg!
Everyone pastes text in there and then I have to go in the databases and remove span and font tags.
Anyway to get back the fast loading/adding/updating Display Products page circa version 3.6.7? It is lite speed compared to 3.6.10,11 and 12.
I have a few stores using 3.6.11 & 3.6.12 and it makes me wanna chew on a rock waiting for stuff to update.
Variations Variations Variations, they make the world go ’round. But there is a big problem with upgrading from 3.6.7 to 3.6.12 –you cannot edit the variations associated with products prior to upgrading or you will get so much grief you wish never tried it.
You may add new variations to a new product a-ok.But everyone has at least some stock with a certain amount of stock per item—and what if you wanted to add a new color or size? You’d have to start a new variation set from scratch.
Shipping is getting better thank you for working on it!
Sorry about the length of this comment I got carried away. I love you guys!
Please, make the translation for spanish… i could do it for you!
I LOVE this plugin. Best ecommerce solution I’ve used so far.
Please keep improving it and adding to it’s stability. I’ve enjoyed and used many of the newer features too.
Suggestion 1:
Make updating the plugin easier. I don’t remember if we’re at 1 click upgrades or not, but it would sure be nice.
Suggestion 2:
A new way to associate digital downloads with products.
If one has hundreds of digital downloads, it is a little clunky to have to load the gigantic list everytime you want to add a product… digital or not.
It would be fine with me if I could upload the digi download in the product, as now, but maybe browse to other ones if I need to.
I rarely ever need to browse the digi downloads… mostly I just need to add new ones.
Thanks much, and please keep up the good work.
Hi there. I am think of adding a classified section in my blog. Will this pluin handle this?
Might I suggest a complete re-do on your instructions!
They are some of the most incomplete, inadequate, and down right miserable set of “how-tos” I’ve ever seen.
A little (or rather A LOT) amount of time spent on your so called “documentation project” would probably help you sell more.
As a matter of fact, contact me and I’ll do it for you! But not for free.
I’m in the business of selling products not programming!
Hi Dan,
I am excited about the features of v 3.7 and am setting up my e-store. I’m having trouble with shipping cost, though. There is a fixed shipping cost – too much to start with – that doesn’t change with additional products. I have tried to set up Flat Rate, Table Rate and Weight Rate and it does not change. I have two products so far with very different weights (and therefore different shipping costs). How do I set up so that each item has its own shipping cost that is calculated in the shopping cart?
Thanks for the Plugin and the advice!
An improvement on the documentation project would be greatly appreciated.
Also, an easier way to update the plugin.
I vote keep the products screen a duel screen.
Hi Dan,
Wouldn’t be much easier if there would be a wordpress style editing for the products. So like in wordpress 2,7, when u go to the page-tab, u have a overview with al the pages, witch is very clean, and where u can change some very basic things within the overview. And when u want to change more u open that page.
I think it would be very usefull, and very easy to use (sinds everyone knows how wordpress works too)
In the overview u could have the name, stock and price change for example. and for the rest u could open the product to edit everything in a one colum based page.
Keep u the good work! Btw when is v3.7 expected???
If you were to implement it like WordPress it would probably make sense for new users and give you much more space to lay out all that product info on a product page. Things like price and stock should definitely be displayed on the overview page. It would then be quite cool to have a “Quick Edit” function like WordPress so you could update the size and stock and perhaps a few other key fields.
-It would be nice to have a settings option to make each item limited in inventory for those who sell only unique one-off items.
-An option to draft/save a product without publishing it would be helpful.
-the ability to pull images from WP’s media library
-remove styling from the core code altogether (please!) and who cares where it goes as long as it’s ALL in one place.
-Validate. Please.
-At various times over various upgrades the admin/settings section has worked in it’s entirety as it should; but with each upgrade something seems to break that was fine before. It would be super-duper nice to get all that stable before adding new features.
Thanks guys. Without discounting your hard work, which we all appreciate, I am hoping that after 6 months of trying, my (gold) cart will be working as it should soon and I can stick it out to see this big upgrade.
How about offering a real (monitored) support forum or answering direct Twitter messages or providing instructions that go beyond screen shots on Flickr? Maybe even a contact page on your blog? How does one go about getting help for WP e-Commerce?
Since I have started using this plugin it has improved with leaps and bounds. Thanks for the good work.
One thing that bothers is that some of the existing features still don’t work. In my case whats bothering is that weight based shipping is broken, but I know of one or two others knocking about annoying other users.
Can we please focus on fixing these before new ones are added?
Can you please confirm this is still broken in the latest Development Version for me. I’ll make sure it gets fixed.
Hey I’ve just uploaded a weight rate fix in the development version (it uses the cart object instead of $_SESSION) yippeee~
Hello,
Do you have support in the current version 2.6.12 or the coming one.. for having options, example:
Product 1, price: $140
Option1, price: $10
option2, price: $23
so now the customer can customize his/her purchase. Adding the prodcut1 with one or more options.
Thanks,
Yigal
Another quick one.
May or may not be of use, but Moneybookers payment module. I noticed there is one for Magento that allows for onsite transactions, something like that in WP E-commerce might be useful.

3.7 and 37 comments, this is a special moment…. oh, and I just ruined it
Hi is it possible to sell Manuals such as (pdf or txt) online
Yup. You Can.
I love the idea of your plug in but it only seems to work on IE not firefox mozilla or safari. Have I dont something wrong?
Yes you have done something wrong – otherwise all the example sites on our forums and around the interweb would be telling lies.
Is it possible to make it so that you can batch edit products? That would be so awesome.
Hi Dan,
When someone makes a purchase and goes to the Check Out, the previous purchaser’s info is entered in the boxes. How do I fix that? It is an issue of privacy.
any chance on getting paypal website payments pro as a gateway sooner rather than later? I am stuck using shopp plugin for my customers that use WPP until then. :(
Are we close to a release yet?
WP e-Commerce 3.7 development is not working with WordPress 2.8 beta.
I think it’s a Javascript issue – it breaks the widget admin interface.
Just checked the latest version with 2.8 and seems to work OK now.
We need an option to store our digital downloads on another server, for example Amazon S3 servers and be able to sell them as product and when purchased the link gets sent to the customer
Contact dan@instinct.co.nz direct if you want help custom developing that one – it is a good idea but we can’t include it with 3.7 and it would need commissioning at this stage.
Did you ever get further on storage of the file on S3 or similar? Am trying to sell enormous video files and need them not hosted on my server.
I am with wildebees on fixing existing bugs before adding new ones. I don’t know how many of you use Paypal. The Buy Now Shortcode for Paypal doesn’t work properly – the price of the item is always at 0.00 at Paypal checkout. Moreover if you have a Buy Now button at the same page as an Add to Cart of the same product, the Buy Now button works the same way as the Add to Cart i.e when you click Buy Now it just adds the product to the Shopping Cart.
I am sure many will appreciate it if that can be fixed.
Thanks.
By working do you mean working like it does on our 3.7 dev site ;)
http://apps.instinct.co.nz/wp_2.7/shortcode/buy-now-button-shortcode/
Wow, that’s excellent news! Sorry I missed that. Any breaking news when 3.7 will be launched? ;-)
Thanks for all the great work.
I am incorporating your cart into several sites and wanted to develop a plug in for a credit card authentication service that we can all use, Can you contact me so I can get it right first time please, thanks
Hi Frank. How do I contact you?
Just getting into WP-e-Commerce, trying to understand it.
As I understand now, variations and special-prices cannot work together. One either has a product without any variations and with a special price, or one has a product with variations but without special price – at least, it’s not shown.
The improvement I’d suggest: maintain the general price and the general special price fields. Maintain the variation price per variation. Allow addition of a special price per variation. The default will be the general one and the general special price.
My customer would like to sell products of different sizes, having different prices, all in discount. The discount needs to be clearly visible.
I’m not into programming WP plugins yet although I’m pretty fluent in PHP. So I cannot be of any help now, maybe in future.
WP e-Commerce 3.7 should support Moneybookers payment gateway. Because in so many countries, the Paypal account can’t receive money and/or withdraw so the better way to receive money is to use Moneybookers. With Moneybookers I can withdraw money that I earned from selling product online to my local bank account.
I hope this feature will be launch in the 3.7 version of WP e-Commerce!
If somebody commissions this development we can do the work :)
Our company can develop such a gateway for u, please contact us!

It would be nice to separate the categories and tags into separate boxes (like the main WordPress admin) on the product editing page, as when I have long category names they often wrap very strangely to make room for the tags.
For the moment I have hacked my install so that the tags appear in a separate table row under the categories.
Ben. Mate. Upload a screen shot for all of us eh – we can put it to the community via a poll :)
Currently the Category and Tags in the admin look like this:
http://www.benhuson.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/wpsc-category-tags-current.jpg
Or, if you have a small screen, sometimes like this (oops):
http://www.benhuson.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/wpsc-category-tags-current-2.jpg
My suggestion is Categories and Tags styling should be brought into line with how WordPress does it for posts, as two separate meta boxes so it should look a bit like this:
http://www.benhuson.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/wpsc-category-tags.jpg
Dan, if you would like to canvas the opinion of the community via a poll please do – I guess via your blog is the best place?
Have added a post to my site about the layout of categories and tags with a little poll. Please feel free to drop by, vote, and leave any comments…

In the table rate shipping, I’d like the ability to have a separate table rate item for insurance. This would be a percentage of the total price or a table rate item that I can enter. Customers may want to have insurance but it isn’t required. Therefore we need the option to charge those that want it.
Additionally, I’d like to see the tax issue for home state addressed….
Tax is fixed in the nightly build. If you want us to build that feature for you then you could commission the work otherwise add it to the feature requests forum :)
Hey Dan,
this has not so much to do with your question, but sinc I don’t know who I can contact to ask any questions besides the forum, i try this.
We have the following problems with the wp e-commerce plugin:
When customers place an order and choose manual payment, they do not get any e-mail that confirms their order, neither does the information show up, that one could give in the admin area (bank account etc). Another thing is that we don’t get an e-mail about an order being placed. This is really annoying and I really hope you guys know how to fix that.
I agree with this one
Love the product, thank you, I had it installed for 5 minutes and went and purchased the Gold plugin. Thanks again
I would like to know how to add a ‘buy now’ or ‘add to cart’ button to a blog or any page
Hi Dan,
This is Peter from Taiwan. I don’t know where to post problems regarding wp e-commerce. Please reply my below query to my email: peter@dionysus.com.tw
I am building a new site based on wordpress + wp e-commerce
however, i am now testing it on a domain name (www.dionysus.com.tw/blogs/eyedeal), which later i will move the completed version to another server (www.eyedeal.com.tw)
I am about to purchase the gold cart module and gridview plugin. But, will it be a problem if I want to change the server later?
Also, I am running wordpress mu, is this gonna cause problems too?
Appreciate your prompt reply asap.
I think it would be nice to have grid view auto-update the prices when the different variations are selected
Hello & Namaste,
We are a non-profit society interested in using WP e-commerce in development of our new Wordpress site. There are some features we would like to see since we are selling courses and retreats:
1. Adding a date to a product, which would enable us to list courses (products) in chronological order.
2. If each product can have a date attached, products (courses) whose date has passed should no longer be visible on the products page. They should automatically expire.
We are very open to supporting the development of these features and would happily pay if this functionality were added to the Gold Cart plugin.
Just a note to let everyone here know I managed to fix the special prices / variations ‘bug’ but didn’t release the code yet as I have to get some quirks out.
Functionality will be: with every variation it’s still possible to set the price as it is now. But a new checkbox appears. If checked, the price will be replaced by the special price set for the entire product.
This is working properly now except for some cosmetic stuff. Guess I’ll manage to do this over the weekend but I’m still waiting for Dan to get instructions how to supply my changeset.
To my surprise I didn’t require any documentation on the instinct site. The code is just readable and pretty selfexplanatory. Good job!
I have clients asking for a gift Registry… That’s my suggestion for 3.7
It has been almost 2 months since this post, when should we expect 3.7? I really do not want to sink hours of time mucking around just before the theme engine is released
We plan to upload Beta 1 tomorrow.
Excellent! Thanks Dan.
How do I purchase the more feature rich version of WP Shopping Cart? I seem to hit a deadend when I click for more info
Thanks,
Rick
