Sydney WordCamp Day 3

Got up early, found Coffee with Jane and Alex. Then caught a Taxi the the Red Box (WordCamp Venue).

Our first presenter was Alister Cameron. Alister talked about Themes, GPL and how to make money with GPL products. Actually this was more his personal conundrum. He also showed us his new Theme Vanilla. Nice. Alister will make money selling services around this… in the same way I would glady pay Ian Stewart from Theme Shaper to make more thematic websites for me.

Harley Alexander was next. What a dude. He is a total WordPress rockstar. His presenation “The Versatile Loop” was a nice easy to understand and I look forward to working with Harley in the future – hopefully Harley can speak at the WGTN WordCamp whenever it happens.

Now we’re listening to Jomar talk about publishing and monitizing from compelling content. Once you have compelling content yuo get a compelled audience. Then come the compelled advertisers. These are the fundamental ingrediants that have not changed in media. All that has changed is the mediums. I’m looking forward to talking to this guy… his Music Producers Forum interests the GetShopped.com side of me. Good times…

Alex Shiels from Automattic showed us Feedpress in WordPress.Com. Yes we were the first in the world to see it… Alex lives in Melbourne so I’m defintely going to stay in touch with him.

So anyway after wordcamp we all bailed to a private fancy dress party with Sam Bauers (from Automattic) and his wife. Her friends were having a joint 40th birthday bash and it was fantastic. A lot of them were performers so it was a visually stunning night and very touching also, one particular fellow played a beautiful piece on a Violin that he composed the belonged to the late mother of the lady who was having the party – I think everybody was in tears.

Afterwards Matt, Jane, Molly and I went and had a fulling dinner at the Sydney Harbourside.

Action points from the weekend:

1/ extra campaign monitor module work
2/ guided navigation
3/ intense “product” debate
4/ import mapping
5/ daily shipping report
6/ secret project from us to ma.tt ;)

It was a great time with you and the other WP groupies, mate.

Look forward to more excuses to hang together in the future.

And if I can get the focus, I do look forward to a Vanilla that I can somehow (legally!) make money out of :)

    Cheers,

    -Alister
